Why their are coloured milestones on Indian Highways? What do they mean?

What is a Milestone?

Milestone is a kind of stone that tell us the distance between a certain point to our destination.
Milestones in India are not same on all the roads ,  colour code of its head vary as per roads either it is a (National Highway , State Highway , District Road or a Village Road ) with name of cities and distance printed in black.

Milestone with Yellow head and White body.
